With the buzz of a big city and charm of a little village, let Amsterdam’s tree-lined canals captivate you. Wander through the city’s labyrinthine streets, the smell of pancakes and spicy ‘speculaas’ coffee linger as you dodge the swarm of bicycles that pound the city’s cobblestone roads. You’ll also delve into Dutch WWII history and visit Gouda’s traditional cheese market.
Welcome to the vibrant and friendly city of Amsterdam where you will find more canals than in Venice. This evening enjoy a Welcome Reception and light meal on a relaxing city cruise along picturesque canals and under stone bridges – the perfect introduction to the city. (WR)
Enjoy a city orientation of Amsterdam with its 17th century architecture this morning. See the Mint Tower and the floating flower market and drive across Dam Square. Stop at the Rijksmuseum where you will see some of the Dutch masterpieces including Rembrandt’s ‘Night Watch’ during a Small Group Sightseeing tour. The rest of the day is free for you to explore the city. This evening consider a typical Dutch meal in a local restaurant. (BB)
This morning visit the Corrie ten Boom House and Museum in Haarlem with a Local Specialist. Corrie ten Boom was a Christian who along with her family helped many Jews escape the Nazi Holocaust during World War II. She was imprisoned for her actions and later wrote a famous book, ‘The Hiding Place’. Later enjoy an excursion to a typical Dutch fishing village. Sample some famous Dutch cheeses during a visit to a windmill to discover the inner workings. Find out about the Zuider Zee and land reclamation from the sea. This evening meet some of our local friends on a farm and enjoy a meal of Dutch delicacies. (BB, RM)
The Hague is the capital of The Netherlands where the parliament is located. Visit the city and find out a little about the International Courts of Justice. This is the judicial branch of the United Nations which also has its headquarters in the city. Enjoy a stop in Delft when you will find out a little about the famous blue pottery when you visit the factory for an included tour with a Local Specialist. Finally visit the world’s largest port city of Rotterdam. This impressive city is best seen with an included visit to the top of the Euromast Tower. A picture perfect moment will be had when you stop to admire the view of a series of traditional windmills in Kinderdijk before returning to Amsterdam. (BB)
Today visit a traditional Cheese Market which takes place in the medieval town of Gouda. The first mention of Gouda cheese dates from 1184 making it one of the oldest recorded cheeses still made in the world today. The cheese is named after the Dutch city of Gouda, not because it is produced in or near the city, but because it has historically been traded here. In the Middle Ages all the cheeses would be taken to the market square in Gouda to be sold. Enjoy seeing this ancient cheese tradition taking place before you have free time to explore some of the other attractions. (Please note that during the opening of Keukenhof an excursion to see the tulip fields will be included instead of the visit to Gouda). This evening celebrate your time in Amsterdam with a delicious Farewell Dinner in the trendy city centre. (BB, FD)
Bid farewell to your travel companions and Travel Director this morning as your time in Amsterdam comes to an end. Airport transfers are available. Conditions apply. (BB)
