Your pilgrimage through northern Spain begins in the colourful Costa Brava city of Barcelona, weaving through bull fighting territory, the culinary capital of San Sebastian and Bilbao, home of the Guggenheim Museum. Marvel at the lush northern peaks of Picos de Europa, visit the pilgrim city of Santiago de Compostela and bask in the golden glow of ancient Salamanca.
Welcome to Barcelona. Relax or explore this lively city before meeting up with your fellow travellers and Travel Director. Enjoy an evening drive to take in some of the city’s main sights followed by a Welcome Reception. (WR)
This morning see Gaudi’s architecture at the inspiring Sagrada Familia. Walk the Ramblas and visit Plaça Catalunya. View the monument to Christopher Columbus during your guided sightseeing tour with a Local Specialist. Consider joining an Optional Experience to Montserrat to see the shrine of the Black Madonna – affectionately known in Catalonia as ‘La Moreneta’. (BB)
Travel to Pamplona, the capital of the old Kingdom of Navarre. The city is famous for the San Fermín festival, commonly known as the Running of the Bulls. See the ancient city walls and Plaza del Castillo, the heart of the city where markets, tournaments and even bullfighting have taken place. (BB, DW)
Arrive in the city of San Sebastian and see the beautiful Bahia de la Concha beach. San Sebastian is known as the culinary capital of Spain so why not enjoy the local pinchos? Perhaps visit the City Hall, once the home of the casino or the Baroque Basilica of Santa Maria. In Bilbao view the modern Guggenheim Museum designed by architect Frank Gehry. Later arrive in Santander, capital of the Cantabrian region. (BB)
The whole day is free to relax and unwind either with a day at the beach or a walk through the historic centre. Alternatively why not join an Optional Experience to the coastal town of Comillas and see the cobbled streets and squares? Perhaps visit Gaudi’s Capricho and the museum dedicated to the Altamira Caves. (BB)
Spectacular scenery awaits today as you travel through the Picos de Europa, a mountain range rich in flora and fauna. The region sits between two main pilgrim routes and has numerous historic market towns. Visit the grotto of ‘Our Lady of Covadonga’. Here you also have the chance to visit the basilica made from the pink marble of the surrounding hills. Later arrive in Oviedo and enjoy a Be My Guest dinner where you will also learn about the local green cider. (BB, BG)
Hidden on the Asturian coast, Luarca is a quiet village and has managed to preserve its seafaring charm. Later arrive in the pilgrim city of Santiago de Compostela. This, for many people, will be the end of their ‘camino’. (BB)
Your Local Specialist will explain the ‘Way of St James’ and why thousands of people walk here as part of a pilgrimage annually. Visit the vast cathedral and the Praza do Obradoiro, a square dominated by four architectural styles. Why not enjoy an Optional Experience to the Rias Biaxas for breathtaking views of the Galician coast. The region has long waterways stretching inland that are said to be the mark left by God’s hand when he cleansed himself after creating the world. (BB)
Start the day with a drive through Galicia and the region of Castile-Leon to Zamora, known as a ‘museum of Romanesque art’. See the 12th century cathedral with its richly sculptured Bishop’s Door and the scaled Dome. Later arrive in Salamanca where a Local Specialist will take you on a sightseeing tour including a visit to Spain’s oldest University as well as a walk through the imposing Plaza Mayor. (BB, DW)
On arrival in Madrid visit the Prado Museum which houses the largest collection of European art in the world. See the Plaza España, Gran Via, Puerta Del Sol and the Cibeles Fountain during your included sightseeing tour with a Local Specialist.
