Today you will explore the Lake District. The outstanding natural beauty of this north western corner of England has attracted poets, painters and writers alike, including Wordsworth, Coleridge, Keats and children’s author Beatrix Potter. Visitors will find constant references to Wordsworth whose property captures his love of nature. Even during his lifetime, admirers swarmed to his 16th Century farmhouse home, Rydal Mount, in the hope of catching a glimpse of the poet. It was at Dove Cottage in Grasmere that he wrote his greatest poems and you can still see the Newspaper Room, wallpapered in newsprint to keep out the cold. There are traces of earlier history too, during the Middle Ages, monks settled in St Bees and at Furness, whose abbey ruins remain among the finest in the north. The 16th Century saw the making of the world’s first pencils at Keswick, when graphite was discovered in nearby Borrowdale – an excellent museum tells the story. Elsewhere, Victorian technology can be admired at Windermere’s Steamboat Museum, while modern nuclear power is explained at the exhibition centre at Sellafield. Overnight in the Lake District.
The Viking city of York is one of the most popular destinations in the UK outside of London, and for good reason. The daunting and dazzling York Minster is one of England’s biggest and finest cathedrals, the Jorvik Viking Centre lets you dive head first into medieval Viking life, and there’s a whole host of other activities to keep you busy for days. If you have time, check out York Dungeons, York Maze, Clifford’s Tower, York Castle Museum, and the National Railway Museum.
One of England’s biggest cities, Liverpool has enough attractions to keep any visitor busy for days. This city gave us the Beatles, and the Beatles Story contains everything you ever wanted to know about the band, and more. Football fans will have a trip to Anfield stadium high on their list, while shopaholics will be spoiled for choice too. Delve into the city’s maritime history at Pier head, or just marvel at the grand architecture all around the city.
Where to begin? London is not just the biggest and best tourist destination in the UK, it’s one of the best in the world too. Oozing history, culture, prestige, style, and everything else in between, this city should not be missed. Shop til you drop on Oxford street, stuff yourself silly with fish and chips, catch a West End show, get a glimpse of the Queen at Buckingham Palace, hear Big Ben chime at noon – the list is endless!
Follow in the footsteps of figures like Sir Walter Scott and William Wordsworth. Spend the night at the historic Macdonald Swan Hotel in Grasmere. Upgrade to an Executive Room, some with views over the garden, or treat yourself to a Feature or Four Poster room with canopied bed. Interconnecting rooms are available, as are family rooms which can accommodate two adults and two children under 12. We also have an accessible bedroom on the ground floor. Our multi-coloured, and impossible-to-miss – Liverpool boutique hotel takes its inspiration from the city’s cotton trading heritage. Unique among Liverpool hotels, our building sits where the cotton warehouses used to be. You’ll notice that its striking style is based on vividly coloured dyes. Bright yellows, purples, greens and oranges make a statement about the area’s heritage and forge a connection between the past and present of this enthralling metropolis.
The evolution of Liverpool has inspired the essence of our hotel, from the bold designs of the bedrooms right through to the music played in our lobby. Splashes of colour, cotton and threads can be seen lovingly woven into our rooms, lobby and corridors, reflecting the area’s cotton trading heritage. While you’re here, be sure to check out our Liverpool-influenced Cotton Lounge. We love introducing our guests to local flavours, so ask our bar staff to make you our signature Cotton Candy Cocktail!
The famous Echo Arena is a ten minute walk away, while up and coming bands play at many of the city’s more intimate venues. Liverpool is home to a plethora of museums, cafes and galleries dedicated to The Beatles. The shopping, galleries and many attractions of Albert Dock are also close by. And if you’re an art fan, a visit to the Walker Art Gallery or Tate Liverpool is a must. Find out more in the Local guide section, then ‘What’s Nearby”.
