One of England’s biggest cities, Liverpool has enough attractions to keep any visitor busy for days. This city gave us the Beatles, and the Beatles Story contains everything you ever wanted to know about the band, and more. Football fans will have a trip to Anfield stadium high on their list, while shopaholics will be spoiled for choice too. Delve into the city’s maritime history at Pier head, or just marvel at the grand architecture all around the city.
Oxford is known the world over as the home of one of the best, universities in the world. Five minutes here is enough to enchant someone, and several days could easily be spent wandering around awe-struck by the beautiful architecture. Just some of the many worthy things you should add to your sightseeing list are the impressive Bodleian Library and fascinating Ashmolean Museum, and the stunning Christ Church and Magdalen Colleges, used as locations for several films, including Harry Potter.
If you didn’t know already, you’ll find out within seconds of setting foot in Stratford-Upon-Avon – it’s the home of the Bard himself, William Shakespeare. Many of the buildings have been preserved since the playwright’s time, and the town centre looks almost exactly as it would have in medieval times. You can see Shakespeare’s humble birthplace, his muse Anne Hathaway’s cottage, and of course, watch a performance of one of his works at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre.
The Viking city of York is one of the most popular destinations in the UK outside of London, and for good reason. The daunting and dazzling York Minster is one of England’s biggest and finest cathedrals, the Jorvik Viking Centre lets you dive head first into medieval Viking life, and there’s a whole host of other activities to keep you busy for days. If you have time, check out York Dungeons, York Maze, Clifford’s Tower, York Castle Museum, and the National Railway Museum.
Today you will explore the Lake District. The outstanding natural beauty of this north western corner of England has attracted poets, painters and writers alike, including Wordsworth, Coleridge, Keats and children’s author Beatrix Potter. Visitors will find constant references to Wordsworth whose property captures his love of nature. Even during his lifetime, admirers swarmed to his 16th Century farmhouse home, Rydal Mount, in the hope of catching a glimpse of the poet. It was at Dove Cottage in Grasmere that he wrote his greatest poems and you can still see the Newspaper Room, wallpapered in newsprint to keep out the cold. There are traces of earlier history too, during the Middle Ages, monks settled in St Bees and at Furness, whose abbey ruins remain among the finest in the north. The 16th Century saw the making of the world’s first pencils at Keswick, when graphite was discovered in nearby Borrowdale – an excellent museum tells the story. Elsewhere, Victorian technology can be admired at Windermere’s Steamboat Museum, while modern nuclear power is explained at the exhibition centre at Sellafield. Overnight in the Lake District.
Viewed as the unofficial capital of northern England, Manchester is a sprawling city with something for everyone. This multicultural metropolis has whole districts dedicated to different ethnicities, including the biggest Chinatown in England and the ‘Curry Mile’, a lengthy street with wall-to-wall sari shops and curry restaurants. Castlefield houses the older historical and cultural quarter, and it goes without saying that a trip to Old Trafford should be top of your list.
